Stephen Hawking
Science’s Brightest Star

Hello, guys! Welcome back to today’s hit time. My name is Kristen.
Hi, everyone. This is Kaiveny, and today, we are going to talk about a great man who just left us.
Kaiveny
Kristen
And you guys probably have already got who we are going to talk about. March 14th, earlier last month, marked the sad passing of Prof Hawking, one of the most influential scientists of the 21st century.
Yeah, people all around the world expressed their condolences. Prof Hawking is such an extraordinary man, and Kristen, we’ve known him like, since primary school, right? In all those textbooks, about his various theories on space and universe.
Kaiveny
Kristen
Right. Prof Hawking is like a god to many people, and his life itself is a miracle. Hawking had a rare early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neuron disease. When first diagnosed with this disease at the age of 18, he was told by doctor that he could only live two more years, but somehow, he managed to live for another 55 years.
Wow, really? Guess sometimes we should not trust doctors too much, huh?
Kaiveny
Kristen
You bet. Well, and I think, one of the things about Stephen Hawking that makes him so notable, you know, over the world, is his strength and resilience. Because, I mean, to be stuck in a wheelchair with limited mobility. His life, is very, very inspiring.
Yeah, and even in a condition like that, he had monumental achievements in science. And we’ve already known some of them in Chinese. Come on, Kristen, tell us how to express them in English.
Kaiveny
Kristen
OK. So, we’re all familiar with his books, right? And in English, two of them are called The Universe in a Nutshell, and A Brief History of Time.
Happy to learn that. But wait a second, what’s a nutshell?
Kaiveny
Kristen
Well, Kaiveny, it’s easy to understand if you break the word into two parts, nut and shell. We all know what a shell means, right? You can find plenty of them on the beach. So, combine them together, nutshell, the shell of the nut, means the hard-outer part of the nut.
Wow, that’s a really useful way to understand the meaning of a word. And I’m eager to know some expressions of Stephen Hawking’s theories.

Kristen
Ok. So, one, or I should say the most famous one, of his predications is Hawking Radiation, the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation. And he also believes in the existence of aliens. Actually, Prof Hawking is more than a scientist. Kaiveny, do you know some other things about him?
Of course! He also showed up in some TV plays, sang songs, as well. In 1993, his synthesizer voice was recorded for the Pink Floyd song "Keep Talking". That’s his first song.
Kaiveny
Kristen
The first! So there is a second?
Yeah, in Pink Floyd’s Talkin’ Hawkin’, he showed his special voice again. I have an idea, why don’t we play it now, in our programme?
Kaiveny
Kristen
Wonderful! You know our audience.
(Takin’ Hawkin’)
Kristen
Wow, he’s so cool. Kaiveny, tell us more. What about movies?
Hawking guest-starred in many movies and TV plays. I enjoy his performance in The Big Bang Theory so much. That’s really hilarious.
Kaiveny
Kristen
Yeah, I know. He and Shelton have a very interesting conversation in his office in that episode. I laughed a lot when I was watching it.
Definitely, wanna watch it now?
Kaiveny
Kristen
Can’t wait.
Besides music, movies, contributions in science, he also left us many well-known sayings, and here are three of them that we want to share with you guys!

I believe the simplest explanation is, there is no God. No one created the universe and no one directs our fate. This leads me to a profound realization that there probably is no heaven and no afterlife either. We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe and for that, I am extremely grateful.
One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don't throw it away.

I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road. (我意识到即使那些宣称一切都是先天注定的人们,我们都无法去改变他们,看到他们将来该走的路。)
All in all, Prof Hawking is just so charming. Again, I feel sorry for his passing away.
Kaiveny
Kristen
Me, too. Some people said he finally could fly in the universe.
I hope so. All right, Kristen, let’s put a song of his as the ending today.

You shall always be commemorated by us all, our great scientist-
